In the beginning of the summer I recorded for the soundtrack of a short animation, “Beren op de Weg”, the graduation project of Nadia Meezen from the Willem de Kooning Academie in Delft. The music is by Bas Bouma, one of the organizers of the Pale Blue Dot project I worked on in 2014 and have since done other work with. The music features the clarinet quite prominently as the solo melody instrument.
“Beren op de Weg” (Bears on the Road) is a Dutch expression, and the film is about Theo, an average man who lives a happy life and who loves his little yellow car. One morning he is driving down the road when suddenly he sees a bear lying on the road. He tries to evade the bear but by doing so he crashes into a tree. From then on he starts seeing bears everywhere around him, scaring him to even get out of his house..
Its already been shown at the Nederlands Film Festival at the end of September 2014, as well as the Animage International Animation Festival in Pernambuco, Brazil, and will also be shown at the Klik! Amsterdam Animation Festival in November! Gefeliciteerd Nadia!
UPDATE– 26 January 2015: I’ve just seen that “Beren op de Weg” was also shown at the Primanima Animation Festival in Hungary in October, the World Animation Celebration Short Film Festival in Los Angeles in November, the Animated Dreams Festival in Estonia also in November, and will be shown at the 9th Istanbul Animation Festival, dates still tba.
UPDATE– 26 February 2015: “Beren op de Weg” just showed at the Anima Festival in Brussels, and has been selected as one of the Dutch animations for the international competition, as well as for the the student animation competition of the Holland Animation Film Festival in March!
UPDATE– 4 May 2015: “Beren op de Weg” will be screened on Ethiopian Airlines flights from July-November!

UPDATE– 18 September 2016: I’ve just checked Nadia’s webpage and seen “Beren op de Weg” had many more screenings in 2015- at Stukafest in Rotterdam, Athens Animfest in Greece, Animated Spirits Festival in New York, Chilemonos Animation Festival in Santiago, Chili, Zlín Film Festival in Czech Republic, Lviv International Short Film Festival Wiz-Art in Ukraine, Countryside Animafest Cyprus in Nicosia, and Animateka Ljubljana, Slovenia; as well as on Norwegian Airlines, and as part of an exposition at Solyanka VPA (video/performance/animation) museum in Moscow, Russia!
